Their homes may be lovely and their food just right, but what happens when we move in and wildlife gets crowded out?
With more than 7.5 billion people on the planet, our increasing demands are eating up natural resources faster than the Earth can replenish them and we’re leaving less and less for bears and other wildlife. This year, our overconsumption used up our natural budget as of August 1. That means we’re headed into five months of debt to the planet, increasing the threat of climate change, drought, pollution and biodiversity loss.
Saving wildlife is sexier than you might think. How sexy? Every time you slip between the sheets with that special someone you can be a hero for wildlife – as long as you protect yourself and the planet. Every day, 227,000 humans are added to the planet and in the United States alone, nearly half of all pregnancies are unplanned.
There are nearly 7.2 billion people on the planet today, and our numbers keep growing. That means more crowds, more traffic, more pollution... and less room for wildlife.
We collected photos submitted via social media depicting what living in a world of 7.5 billion looks like and feels like to people around the world. The photos can be seen in this video released in honor of World Population Day 2014. Join the conversation by using the hashtag #CrowdedPlanet.
Endangered Species Condoms Student Video Contest, Fall 2015
The Center’s Population and Sustainability program once again partnered with Mary Poffenroth, Instructor at San Jose State University, for an extra credit student video contest featuring our Endangered Species Condoms. Each student was asked to submit a 30- to 90-second public service announcement about the condoms and the connection between population growth and wildlife extinction. There were more than 80 entries. These are the top videos.

Earth Day at Purdue University
Go, Bird, Go! distributes our Endangered Species Condoms at Purdue University on Earth Day... in a hellbender suit.
Human Population Growth and Wildlife Extinction
There are more than 7.5 billion people on the planet, and we're adding 227,000 more every day. The toll on wildlife is impossible to miss: Species are disappearing 1,000 to 10,000 times faster than the natural rate — the fastest rate since dinosaurs roamed the planet.
Interviewer Gets Slapped!
Why did Growthbusters director Dave Gardner get slapped by several women on Earth Day? Watch Gardner talk to people about the greenest thing they can do to save the environment. (Hint: It involves Endangered Species Condoms.) Gardner's 2011 documentary, GrowthBusters: Hooked on Growth, examines our culture’s unsustainable addiction to growth.
